Founded in 2001, the School of Foreign Languages(SFL) ,was formerly known as Foreign Languages Department and renamed as the School of Foreign Languages in May 2015. SFL was awarded the title Province English major Teaching Team and another title Province CPC Benchmark Construction Unit for Schools and Departments.
SFL offers four undergraduate programs: English (English Education, International Trade and Cross-border E-commerce), Japanese, Translation and Business English, with 2678 students and 138 faculty members.In recent years, SFL faculty have published more than 300 papers in provincial journals, among which 48 were published in core journals. In addition, 4 teaching and research projects at provincial level, 18 at municipal level, and more than 40 innovation and entrepreneurship projects for college students at all levels have been undertaken by staff of the School. Besides, 10 textbooks have been published by them. In the past five years, more than 30 teachers have won provincial or above teaching awards. Over the years, SFL graduates have enjoyed a high employment rate. The first-time employment rate from 2016 to 2021 remained at 95.97 percent to 98.53 percent. Their work areas include education, management, international trade, cross-border e-commerce, secretarial and civil service in Guangdong Province and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Sixteen graduates in 2020 and Eighteen graduates in 2021 were admitted into master’s degree programs of well-known universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. SFL provides TEM-4 and TEM-8 testing services for English and Japanese majors, which promotes the School’s continuous quality improvement..
Teaching Feature 1: Promoting learning with competition and enhancing basic skills for speciality.
Taking the professional competition as the starting point, SFL encourages all students to take part in competitions to carry out the awareness in teaching. More than 10 kinds of competitions at all levels are held including the National English Contest for College Students, “the FLTRP Cup” National College Students English Speech Contest, English Debate, English Writing, English Reading Competition, Guangdong Province Translation Competition for College Students, English Drama Competition, Guangdong Province University Japanese Speech, Japanese Talent Competition. In the past five years, a total of 156 students have won provincial and national awards.
Teaching Feature 2: School-Enterprise cooperation to improve students’ practical ability
Twenty-two practical teaching bases have been established with enterprises, schools, foreign-related units, etc., in which enterprise internships, educational internships, and exhibition internships have been offered to gain triple wins for the school, enterprises, and students. With unremitting efforts, the rate of professional internships can reach 100%.
Teaching Feature 3: Integration of industry and education to cultivate professional skills
The “Ali Cross-border E-commerce Industry Class” was launched, and taught by teachers with rich e-commerce experience from New Ideas Company of Alibaba, practicing online and recommending employment. At the same time, the application of the School for the Advanced Certificate Examination Center of 1+X “Vocational Skill Certificate of Cross-border E-commerce B2B Data Operation” was approved by Ministry of Education, facilitating student to take training and examination.
Teaching Feature 4: International exchanges broadening students’ international vision
Through International Cooperation and Exchange Office, international exchange activities of students are becoming increasingly active. In the past two years, the School has established exchange relations with 18 foreign universities, which has broadened the channels for students to study and exchange abroad. In 2020, the unit of “IELTS Accredited Institution” was awarded by British Council, facilitating students to apply for and take the IELTS test.
Taking teaching quality as the center, with continuous improvement of the internal teaching management and the quality of the teachers, all the faculty and staff of the School of Foreign Languages actively participate in teaching reform to cultivate outstanding foreign language talents with unremitting efforts.
