The Department of Computer Technology was founded in 2001. It was renamed the Department of Computer Science and Technology in March, 2006 and then transformed into the School of Computer Science and Engineering in March, 2015. In September 2017, its official name became School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE).
SCSE aims to cultivate high-calibre applied talents with distinctive features in such fields as computer applications, software engineering, big data technology, network information security, digital media, urgently needed by our society. Working closely with enterprises, SCSE launched in 2019 a partnership with Blue Shield Information Security Technology Co., Ltd. And jointly established an industrial school, committed to developing senior engineering talents with solid basic theories and strong operational skills and a major called network engineering (cyberspace security direction), adopting the “3+1” (3 years on campus plus 1 year of enterprise practice) mode and the “core courses + modular teaching + enterprise practical training + project analysis” integration.
While highlighting our students’ comprehensive quality and practical ability, SCSE strengthens the application of engineering and constantly explores more effective new models for talent development by organizing project-based teaching teams.. Under the guidance of members from the Renowned Faculty Studio, the Faculty-Engineer Studio, the Social Service Studio and the Doctoral Studio, our students participate in the reform of the teaching model, discipline competitions, scientific research projects, enterprise projects as well as innovation and entrepreneurship activities. This educational model won the first prize of the University Teaching Awards, and the second prize of the Provincial Teaching Awards.
SCSE graduates are well sought after by all sectors of society and our employment rate in the past three years has been more than 97%, ranking in the forefront of other colleges and universities in the province.
1. Professional Setting and Scale
SCSE has six undergraduate majors: Computer Science and Technology, Network Engineering, Software Engineering, Digital Media Technology, Digital Media Art, Data Science and Big Data Technology.
Computer Science and Technology has two concentrations: Computer Software, Big Data Technology and Application, ,Network Engineering: Cyberspace Security and Cloud Computing, Software Engineering: Enterprise Computing and Mobile Application Development, Digital Media Technology: Game Development and Virtual Reality Technology. Now the total number of students stands at 2887.
2. Institutions and Teaching Staff
SCSE has two administrative units, the School Office and the Student Affairs Office, and four teaching units: Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of Software Engineering, Department of Digital Media Technology, and Experimental Training Center.
SCSE’s team consists of young and middle-aged faculty as the main pillar, dedicated to teaching and research capabilities after more than ten years of construction. Among the 107 faculty and staff, 7 are full professors and 36 are associate professors.
3.Laboratory and Practice Base
The 12 laboratories include cloud computing and big data, network security, Cisco network technology, integrated wiring, photography and videography, nonlinear editing, software testing, and software engineering. The area covers 2,620 square meters, and there are 2,395 sets (pieces) of experimental instruments and equipment, which are worth over 10 million yuan.
SCSE boasts strong links with enterprises and institutions for project-driven teaching mode reform. Fourteen off-campus practice bases have been built, with such enterprises as Guangdong SUNM Technology Co, Ltd. ,Guangdong Xuanyuan Network Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Tengke Network Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Chaoye Culture Development Co., Ltd., and Guangzhou Petunia Software Technology Co., Ltd.
The four school-enterprise collaborative platforms include Blue Shield Cyberspace Security College, SUNM Technology Big Data and Cloud Training Center, Digital Campus Project Team, and Cisco Network College. They have jointly built a provincial-level industrial robot engineering technology research center platform. The two scientific research institutions, Human-Computer Interaction Technology Research Institute and the Digital Media Research Institute, and a provincial off-campus internship base, strengthen our students' ability and employability and enhance their social and professional adaptability.
4. Collection of Books and Materials
In order to facilitate teaching and research, SCSE has a library of more than 3,600 books and written materials for the teaching and tutoring of digital media and computer majors, a total of 84,397 books on such fields as digital media and computer, 72 kinds of journals (including 11 foreign language journals) and 55,116 e-books. In the past four years, the purchase of books and documents for computer-related majors has reached 2.7316 million yuan. The resources can meet the needs of faculty and students.
5. Teaching and Research
SCSE has one University Key Discipline, one key major, three National-Designated projects and 15 Province Teaching and Research projects, received funding amounting to 393,200 yuan.
In the past four years, SCSE faculty members have published 137 papers in academic journals at home and abroad, and 31 papers were published in core journals, having conducted 12 provincial and municipal scientific and technological research projects, 17 horizontal projects and 19 textbooks were published as well..
Our students actively participate in such competitions as the Challenge Cup, having won 27 national competition awards, including one first prize, three second prizes, and twenty-three third prizes; 94 provincial competition awards, including 12 first prizes, 31 second prizes, and 51 third prizes. A total of 21 innovation and entrepreneurship projects for university students have been conducted, including 5 national and 16 provincial projects.
The School of Computer Science and Engineering, thanks to our competent teaching and management team, has educated for the past ten years 4200 graduates who have made great contributions to the economic construction of Guangdong Province and the surrounding regions.
